Fiestas populares en Maldivas
La República de las Maldivas es un país musulmán, por ello para la mayoría de las festividades siguen el calendario islámico que es lunar, así que de un año para otro las fechas sufren variaciones.

Fisherman’s Day
The country recognises the work of its fishermen and honours them with a celebration. This annual celebration takes place on December 10th and a number of different events take place to celebrate and give thanks for the great contribution from everyday fishermen to the economy of the Maldives.

Kuda Eid Festival
Celebrated on the first day of the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. It's a 3-day celebration. This religious festival marks the end of Ramadan with the sighting of the new moon marked by a cannon shot in Malé broadcast on television. The mosque is visited early to offer prayers, make offerings and give alms to the poor, and seek divine blessings. Traditional dances are performed in the rural islands.

National Day
Celebrated on the first day of the third month of the lunar calendar. It commemorates Thakurufaanu’s victory in Malé over the Portuguese in 1573, ending their colonial invasion as they had established their own government after killing the Sultan of the Maldives. There are parades and marches through the street of the capital.

Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday
Celebrated on the twelfth day of the third month in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the birth of Muhammad. It is traditional to invite family and friends to eat delicious dishes prepared for the occasion.

Ramadan
Celebrated during the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It begins with the appearance of the new moon and ends with the appearance of the next, so the exact period varies from year to year. It is one of the most important festivals in the Maldives.

Republic Day
Commemorates the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the republic on November 11, 1968. A colourful and lively celebration.
